Connections 2018, which takes place from June 12-14, is now well underway in the Windy City and so far it has been captivating and inspirational.
As we announced in Part 1 of this three-post series, RelationEdge is not only covering this incredible Salesforce event — we’re also a part of it.
We’ve been live-tweeting the event via RelationEdge Twitter, and in this second blog post, we’re giving you the inside scoop on some of the highlights so far — including sessions from our very own team members.
Opening Keynote with Lucy Liu
Connections 2018 got off to a great start on Tuesday with an Opening Keynote on women’s equality from actress, director, and humanitarian, Lucy Liu. She spoke about her own experiences facing stereotypes in Hollywood, what she learned about work ethic from her family, and the importance of equality for all.
Great Customer Service is Social
Our VP of Solutions, Chris Zullo, presented an informative session on the use of social media in effective customer service.
“Social needs to be bi-directional — it’s not just for posting and promoting.”
Zullo addressed GDPR requirements, which have quickly become one of the top talking points in the world of digital marketing. His advice? Don’t overlook them. Remove GDPR issues from your social media platforms as soon as possible.
Zullo also demonstrated how to use technology to identify a tweet that might be perceived as negative, and create a customer service case straight from the tweet. This lesson goes to show how powerful social media can be for your brand and your customer experience.
Happy Hour Connect
The first day of Connections 2018 ended with an intimate networking event at Apogee rooftop bar.
RelationEdge team members joined our fellow Salesforce representatives and Trailblazers for delicious cocktails and appetizers against the Chicago skyline. It was a fun way to enjoy the city views, meet attendees from every kind of industry, and share ideas about personalizing the customer experience.
The Power of the Trailblazer Community
On Wednesday, our Director of Engagements Denise Carbone presented her inspiring session “How Trailblazer Community Group Uplifts Your Career and Your Life.” Carbone spoke about her experience joining the Trailblazer Community and how this supportive group has enabled her to collaborate, share knowledge, and network with other Trailblazers to further her own career.
Zullo hosted the exhilarating Demo Jam, Salesforce’s game show style competition in which app partners showcase their most compelling app in a short demo. Congratulations to Localytics, who was voted the winner at this hugely popular event!
Trailblazing Women in Sales & Marketing
Bethany Kemp of Design Within Reach and Jen Wachtel of Gallagher joined forces in an eye-opening session on the female experience in the sales and marketing industry. They emphasized the importance of learning to step outside of your comfort zone, noting that women may be less likely to raise their hand in a group setting or ask for more responsibility in the workplace.
These Trailblazing Women had some words of wisdom for all the women in this industry: “Go for it. Try something that scares you, because it’s important to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.”
When asked how women can grow their careers at a company, Kemp and Wachtel both agreed on the same piece of advice: Look for a problem at the company that no one has tried to solve yet, and take responsibility for finding a solution.

The Party at Connections
Wednesday ended with an unforgettable event hosted by Salesforce. The Killers took the stage at Wintrust Arena with a breathtaking performance, ending the first two days of Connections 2018 with a bang.
